The Mechanism

Critical to healthy circulation is nitric oxide. Produced naturally by the body, nitric oxide functions as a signaling molecule that helps blood vessels relax and expand when increased blood flow is needed. When nitric oxide levels are healthy, blood moves efficiently through the vascular system. While moving blood is obviously a crucial part of the circulation equation, there’s much more to it. 

Every blood vessel is lined with a thin layer of specialized cells called the endothelium. This inner lining acts as a command center for vascular health. It helps regulate blood vessel tone, blood pressure, inflammatory activity, and nitric oxide production itself. Healthy endothelial cells continually signal to vessels to remain responsive and adaptable. 

The challenge is that many of the pressures that modern men face work against this system. 

Ongoing stress, inactivity, elevated blood sugar, poor nutritional habits, oxidative stress, and inflammation can gradually impair endothelial function and reduce nitric oxide availability.  

As blood vessels become less responsive, circulation becomes less efficient. The proverbial highways begin to narrow, traffic slows, and essential resources don’t reach their destinations as effectively. This type of bottleneck has great effects on cardiovascular health, but the challenges can extend well beyond that. 

The brain depends on a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to maintain focus, memory, and cognitive performance.  

Muscles require healthy blood flow to sustain energy production and remove metabolic waste during exercise.

Healthy circulation also depends on the integrity of the endothelium’s protective surface layer known as the glycocalyx. This microscopic structure helps to shield blood vessels, support nitric oxide production, and maintain healthy vascular function. Over time, factors like inflammation imbalances, oxidative stress, and aging can erode this protective layer, making blood vessels less responsive and less resilient. 

This is why circulation is best viewed as a multi-faceted performance system rather than just a marker of cardiovascular health. Fortunately, with intentional daily habits and targeted nutritional strategies, that performance system can be maintained at any age.

  • Break up long periods of sitting throughout the day 

Feed The Nitric Oxide Pathways 

  • Prioritize nitrate-rich foods such as arugula, spinach, and beets, and consider nutrients such as L-citrulline that support nitric oxide production 
  • Support healthy vascular responsiveness with botanicals such as hawthorn, ginkgo, and bacopa
